I started geocaching in July 2003 after reading an article in a local newspaper.
My first few finds was with a Garmin eTrex, which I rented from the local camping store. Immediately I was convinced that this was a fun activity. It combined my love of being outdoors with technology. In a way it also added extra incentive to going for a walk.
For the next three years I found numerous caches around Canberra – Australia’s capital city – and the nearby Snowy Mountains, including some of Australia’s highest geocaches.
A visit to Vietnam, and another to New Zealand, saw the GPS receiver and Palm Pilot travel in my luggage. It added an extra dimension to my holiday.
Toward the end of 2004 I traveled to Hawaii. One memorable afternoon was spent riding on a moped around Honolulu, while a few days later I was logging a find half-way up Mauna Kea.
Other overseas adventures have seen me capture finds in the US, Mexico, UK, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Turkey, Vietnam and Taiwan.
In 2006 I moved to Sydney and found a whole new world of geocaches. Since then I’ve been enjoying the diverse caches in the region – more urban hides in the city, through to challenging hides in the Blue Mountains. |
